Leadership Mississippi 2010-11 class under way
Government, early childhood education focus of opening session
The Leadership Mississippi Class of 2010-11 opened the year with a three-day meeting in Jackson Jan. 20-22. In addition to discussing politics, state government and visiting the State Capitol. The group took a look at projects for the year and attended a Next Step conference for early childhood education.
Leadership Mississippi received a record numbers of nominations and applications. A group of 53 was selected for the class and will travel across the state to participate in sessions on Quality of Life, Education, Healthcare and Government. These class members have joined a growing number of leading Mississippians in helping to build a better Mississippi.
Leadership graduation Set for March 5 Winter & Reed to Keynote event
Leadership Mississippi 's graduation for the 2009-2010 Class has been rescheduled for March 5, at the Old Capitol Inn in Jackson. The meeting will feature former Governor William Winter and Past MEC Chair Jack Reed Sr. Graduation was originally scheduled for Jan. 8, but due to weather had to be postponed.

The M.B. Swayze Educational Foundation of the Mississippi Economic Council STAR program encourages scholastic achievement among the state's high school students and recognizes excellence in the teaching profession. STAR Students are seniors with the highest ACT scores and scholastic averages in more than 250 public, private and parochial schools across the state. Each STAR Student selects his or her Star Teacher - the teacher who has made the greatest contribution to the student's scholastic achievement. Since 1966, the STAR program has honored nearly 20,000 students and teachers.

Leadership Mississippi alum Dr. Cathy Grace (1982-83) was presented the 2009 Winter-Reed Partnership by the Mississippi Association of Partners in Education for her commitment to improving education in Mississippi. The award was presented Sept. 21 at Winter-Reed Partner in Education program at Mississippi State University. Dr. Grace played a key role in Mississippi’s statewide implementation of kindergarten, which was strongly supported by Leadership Mississippi.
Leadership Mississippi's goal is to develop and maintain a network of Mississippians committed to strengthening our state's quality of life. Leadership Mississippi's objectives are to identify Mississippians who have demonstrated leadership potential through job-related and community activities, to train participants by sharpening their leadership skills and to motivate participants by increasing awareness of community and state challenges, involving participants in problem-solving activities on issues of current interest, and providing a network of leaders across the state who are actively involved in improving Mississippi's quality of life.
